Please join me for a nice cup of tea and some friendly conversation…

Hello to everyone out in blogger land! The past few months have been a veritable whirlwind . Many changes have been going on in our lives. To start with, we decided to make a fairly big move to a new city. I won’t bore you with all the reasons why we chose to do that, but it sure is turning out to be quite the adventure. We packed almost all of our belongings away in storage and moved about 4 hours drive away.  We don’t know anyone here, and we have no jobs lined up either! Are we crazy? Maybe just a little….

We’re currently renting a furnished place for a few months to see if we like the area. The place we are staying is pretty nicely equipped, which is good because we only brought some of our things with us. I do miss a few things… like our bed, our pantry and our kitchen work island to name a few. I feel quite comfortable in the apartment, but cooking is much more of a challenge in the small galley kitchen since there is hardly any counter space at all. We also really miss having a BBQ, especially with all this hot weather we’ve been having. It’s great when you can just plan a simple meal on the grill and just have a salad or something with it.

That’s where I’ve been. I’ve really missed visiting my blog though, so I thought I’d pop in and tell you about tonight’s dinner disaster.

Hubby was out exploring this evening so I thought I’d cook something he can’t stand to eat – FISH. I’d had these frozen “grilled” filets in the freezer for a while and I thought it was a great opportunity to try something new. A while back I saw a recipe for fish tacos, so I decided making a fish wrap would be a fun idea.

As the fish was cooking in the oven, I started noticing it had quite a “fishy” odour. Thankfully Hubby wasn’t here to complain!

Frozen Fish Wrap

  • a whole wheat tortilla
  • a bit of mayo
  • some fresh baby spinach
  • sliced tomato
  • and of course the fish (which I chopped up into bite-size pieces).

I sat down to enjoy my lovely concoction…. took one bite and became quite sad. First off, it tasted rather boring. Okay, not the end of the world. As I continued though, the fish was just awful – tasteless (except for fishy taste) and the texture was springy (almost rubbery, even though the fish was not overcooked). I swear if it was not for the tomatoes in the there, I would barely have been able to stomach finishing it.

Now, before you jump to any conclusions… I really do like quite a few different kinds of fish. I used to love all types of seafood at one time too, until I developed a severe allergy. Admittedly,  I do find fish that has batter or breadcrumbs more tasty, but there are plenty types of fish I enjoy plain. This was not one of them. I don’t know if it was the type of fish, the brand, or the fact that it was a frozen rectangle shaped block… Whatever the reason, I thought it was awful and seriously debated throwing out the other “filet” that I had to cook because they come packaged stuck together when frozen.

I have considered things that might have made it more tasty. Perhaps if I’d stuck to a taco idea and added salsa and taco fixings. Maybe I should have added some cheese and make a tartar type sauce to make it more like a fish-wich. Honestly though, I just don’t think anything would have helped salvage my meal.

Have you ever tried making anything like this? Is there something you’d recommend to make it taste better or do you think maybe it was just this particular type/brand of fish?

Frozen Disaster #2 – Green Tea Smoothie

Moving on, I also decided to try making a new recipe I had recently found for a green tea smoothie. I am not really a smoothie person, but there was a brand new blender in the cubpoard just begging to be used. Earlier this week, I picked up some frozen fruit and some greek yogurt (with honey) so I could give it a try. I mixed together:

  • green tea (cooled)
  • frozen peaches
  • a couple of spoonfuls of greek yogurt (honey added)
  • some ice cubes

I did a taste test and found it to have very little flavour. I then tried adding:

  • a small splash of orange juice
  • some frozen strawberries
  • a few more ice cubes

I tasted it again, and it still did not have much taste. I then added a teaspoon of honey to try and sweeten it up.

Final Rating: Mediocre

This did not blow me away by any means. It was very filling, but not really very flavourful. I know some might suggest adding a banana would improve it, but I don’t care much for them. To be honest, the only thing I could think to add to it was ice cream… which defeated the purpose of me trying to make a fairly healthy smoothie. So, I ended up with 3 cups of smoothie and managed to drink one cup. The rest is in the fridge.

Ah well, tomorrow is another day. Maybe it will turn out to be SENSATIONAL Saturday!

Do you have any food flops or success stories to share?

Tidy Up Your Keyboard

I was just reading through some hints and tips I’ve gathered over the years.

Here’s one tip I found that I’d completely forgotten about, but works great!

Clean your computer keyboard with a post-it note. Just slide the sticky side between the rows of keys and it will pick up small crumbs and lint.

I noticed sometimes the bits of lint gather together and get stuck at the end of a row. I found by holding my keyboard almost upside down over the desk helped. Once done, I also lightly blew on it to release any remaining bits.

Since the post-it note doesn’t fit between each actual key very well, I just remembered another great tip. You can use a q-tip to clean between the keys. You can even dip the tip in a bit of isopropyl alcohol (you just want it a bit damp) for some added help . You might want to unplug your keyboard first though! I have a wireless one, so I just do it when the computer is off, or go in another room out of the range of my keyboard’s wireless receiver.

Of course there are those little keyboard vacuums. I’ve tried a few, but can’t really say I’m a fan. I know people who use compressed air to clean their keyboards too. Maybe it’s just me, but that stuff kind of freaks me out! Anyway, post-it notes and q-tips are much less expensive and likely something you already have on-hand.

As an added bonus, you could even write a reminder on a post-it note to clean your keybaord with the post-it note for next time….

So, just last week we were enjoying wonderful, warm, balmy weather. It was beautiful and spring-like. Actually, it was closer to lovely summer weather, without any bugs or humidity. I began contemplating burgers on the barbeque, crisp, fresh salads and sitting on the patio…

Just a Slug…

Just a Slug

Oh, I’m a slug
a lowly bug
who never does a thing,
although I’d like
to ride a bike
or maybe learn to sing.

I used to be intimidated by the thought of making my own chicken soup from scratch. This is something I NEVER saw my mother make. I do have fond memories of my grandmother making chicken rice soup from scratch. It was so delicious. Read the rest of this entry »

I was speaking with a friend today, and we were discussing a poem they’d written about counting sheep. I mentioned that when I have too many things running around in my mind and have trouble getting to sleep, I use ”The Worry Tree” method.

I shop at five different grocery stores (well, six if you count Walmart). Okay, I don’t shop at all of them every week. I have two grocery stores just down the road from me. I try to shop at them most often. I check my store flyers each week, and try to buy items that are on sale as often as I can. Some weeks, I don’t buy anything or just stop in the get any basics we might have run low on (usually milk).

I also know the prices on a lot of the items I buy, and can spot when they have a “supposed” sale that is not a good deal. Have you ever noticed that? One week a grocery store will have an item on sale for say $2.99, then the following week they put the exact same item in the flyer for $3.99 (exact same item). Technically, it’s still a sale, because it’s still priced lower than the regular price. I’m watching you grocery stores! LOL Read the rest of this entry »

Not me!  *Cough, Cough*

I guess it’s time to do some dusting in here!

Maybe I’ll just leave the cobwebs, since it is getting close to Halloween. Ha Ha!!

It’s been a while since I last shared with you about my Dinner Doldrums. It took a bit longer to get out of my cooking rut than I expected.

Well, that’s not exactly right. You see, what happened was that I did finally try out a bunch of new recipes. The problem is, quite a few of them were not as good as I had hoped.

Dinner Doldrums

Do you ever get tired of making dinner? I don’t mean too tired to actually prepare dinner… just tired of coming up with ideas for dinner.

I like cooking. In fact, I like cooking a lot. I’ve been told I’m pretty good at it too. Lately though, I just don’t feel inspired to make anything. I open the pantry and stare blankly at all the various cans and boxes and packages. I open the freezer and all I see are frozen blocks of items just waiting to be whipped up into something appetizing. If only they would give me a hint or two.

Normally, I have all kinds of ideas for meals. I love reading cookbooks. I sign up for all kinds of emails (probably too many) from cooking sites. Quite often I can even get ideas from reading the grocery store flyers and spotting something on sale. Lately though, nothing looks intriguing. I’d be happy eating a peanut butter sandwich or a bowl of cereal for dinner. In fact, it’s been known to happen on occasion too!

I just feel like I have the dinner doldrums….

Does this happen to you? What do you to get yourself out of the rut? I need some inspiration!!

As we’ve all heard… a watched pot never boils. However, anyone who cooks regularly has at one time or another had to scramble to get their unwatched pot off the stove top because it has decided to erupt like a volcano. One minute you are watching the spot, stirring even, and you turn your back just for one minute (maybe even 30 seconds). Perhaps you’ve put a lid on the pot, so you might get the early warning signal - that crazy pot lid rattling sound signalling impending disaster. If you’re not so lucky, it’s the sudden horrific splashing, hissing sound that alerts you to your upcoming cooking catastrophe.

Well, maybe it’s not that drastic, but it does make a heck of a mess and usually throws your cooking schedule off-track.

What is one to do, in order to avoid this dire pot dilemma?

The answer is … a “Pot Watcher“. Read the rest of this entry »
