Just a Slug…

Just a Slug

Oh, I’m a slug
a lowly bug
who never does a thing,
although I’d like
to ride a bike
or maybe learn to sing.

And if I could
I think I would
become a master spy.
Then go and get
a fighter jet
and really learn to fly.

I’d mountain climb.
I’d rap in rhyme.
I’d gain karate skills.
I’d bronco ride
and paraglide
and have some spills and thrills.

I’d take a trip
by rocketship
to soar among the stars.
I’d travel free
past Mercury
and Jupiter and Mars.

The books I’d write!
The bulls I’d fight!
The places I would go!
If only I
were quick and spry
instead of sad and slow.

Alas, it seems,
despite my dreams,
I’ll have to pull the plug
on all I ache
to undertake
for I am just a slug.

Kenn Nesbitt

I just read this poem on another blog. It’s written as a kids poem, but for some reason it struck me differently.

Do you ever feel a bit like the slug?

Maybe you have all kinds of dreams and aspirations, but you feel a bit trapped or lacking the ability to accomplish them. I know I feel that way some days.

It’s quite likely many of us have things holding us back. Maybe it’s a lack of  funds, training, experience or skills. Perhaps you have a serious disability or illness that limits you. Sometimes you might be your own worst enemy, letting overwhelm or fear get in your way.

Whatever the reason, some days it might seem easier to just resign yourself to being the slug… just accepting fate. I refuse to believe you need to live your life that way. I actually think it’s okay to have the occasional day when you might feel down. One of those days where maybe it’s just enough to get through another day. You just don’t want to let every day slip away because of that mindset. I truly believe in going after what you want, as long as you aren’t hurting anyone in the process (yourself included). Face life with enthusiasm and curiosity. It’s good to have goals and dreams, but even better when you actually pursue them!

“Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, champagne in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming “WOO HOO what a ride!”   ~ Author Unknown

How about you? Do you ever feel like the slug? What do you do about it?
